Here in at the Great White North U., we are just wrapping up Reading Week.
Ah, Reading Week. How I longed for your arrival. The plans I had for you! And how you are gone, cruelly too soon.
What do we do on Reading Week? What are we supposed to do? (Those two things are not the same.) Let me lay it out for you.
What I plan to do:
- Read important books.
- Write important papers.
- Think.
What I tell colleagues I am doing:
- Reading important books.
- Writing important papers.
- Thinking.
What I tell students I do:
- Read important books.
- Write important papers.
- Think.
What I actually do:
- Nap with cats.
- Watch Netflix.
- Spend time on Bored Panda looking at funny animal photos.
- Refill anti-anxiety medication.

What you did was exactly what you needed to do- naps, naps, naps. They are the breakfast, lunch and dinner of hard working academics and any of us who need to make room in brains that feel full, anxious or in need of well earned ‘down time.’
